Thousands Gather in Tehran as Iran Begins Six-Day Farewell for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Iran has officially begun the six-day funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with thousands of mourners gathering at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran to pay their final respects. The funeral marks the start of a nationwide farewell that will continue through July 9, with ceremonies planned across several cities in Iran and neighboring Iraq. 

The coffins containing the bodies of Ayatollah Khamenei and several members of his family were placed on display at the Grand Mosalla, where large crowds of mourners attended prayers and farewell ceremonies. Authorities expect millions of people to participate in the processions and memorial events during the coming days.

According to the official funeral schedule, the ceremonies will continue with processions at multiple locations before concluding with Ayatollah Khamenei’s burial in Mashhad on July 9. High-level delegations from several countries are also expected to attend the state funeral, reflecting its regional and international significance.

The funeral ceremonies are being held under extensive security arrangements as Iran observes one of its most significant national mourning events in recent decades.
