Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan dedicated his team’s historic FIFA World Cup victory over Australia to the people of Palestine following Egypt’s dramatic qualification for the Round of 16. The emotional tribute came after Egypt secured its first-ever World Cup knockout win, while celebrations were also reported in Gaza, where fans gathered to watch the match despite the destruction caused by the ongoing conflict.
Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 following extra time in their Round of 32 clash at Dallas Stadium. The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot, with Hossam Abdelmaguid scoring the winning penalty after Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed their attempts.
Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, who headed home the opening goal. Australia equalized early in the second half after an unfortunate own goal by Mohamed Hany, forcing the match into extra time and eventually penalties.
Speaking after the victory, Hossam Hassan dedicated the win to both the Egyptian and Palestinian people. He offered prayers for the Palestinians, saying he hoped for their victory and prayed for mercy on those who had lost their lives. He added that the historic triumph belonged to both the people of Egypt and Palestine.
Following the final whistle, Hassan walked onto the pitch carrying both the Egyptian and Palestinian flags. The Egyptian players also celebrated by performing a collective prostration, marking one of the most memorable moments in the country’s football history.
With the victory, Egypt advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time ever and will now prepare for their next challenge as they continue their historic FIFA World Cup campaign.
