Two U.S. Navy fighter jets crashed during an air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base on May 17, 2026, causing panic among spectators and forcing officials to cancel the remainder of the event. The incident involved two EA-18G Growler aircraft from Electronic Attack Squadron 129, which reportedly collided mid-air while performing during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show in Idaho.
According to initial reports, both aircraft exploded after crashing to the ground near the base. Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene as thick smoke and debris spread across the area. Authorities confirmed that all four crew members aboard the two jets managed to eject safely before impact. Officials later stated that the pilots and crew members were in stable condition and no injuries were reported among people attending the air show.
Following the crash, security measures were immediately enforced at the air base. Officials placed the base under lockdown and cancelled all remaining air show activities for safety reasons. A section of State Highway 167 near the crash site was also temporarily closed as emergency crews worked to clear debris and secure the area.
The crash additionally triggered a small wildfire near the base due to burning wreckage, prompting firefighters to respond quickly to prevent the flames from spreading further. Authorities later confirmed that the fire was brought under control.
Investigators have now launched an official inquiry to determine the cause of the mid-air collision. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding flight safety during aerial demonstrations, while videos and eyewitness footage from the crash continue circulating widely on social media.
