Thousands of mourners filled the streets of Tehran as the coffin of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was carried through the capital during a state funeral procession. The ceremony drew senior government officials, military leaders, religious figures, and members of the public, marking one of the country’s largest mourning events in recent years.
The funeral procession also honored several of Khamenei’s family members who were killed alongside him in the February airstrike. Mourners dressed in black gathered along the route, waving Iranian flags, holding portraits of the late leader, and paying their final respects as the coffins were transported through the city.
The procession is part of a series of nationwide mourning ceremonies taking place across Iran before Khamenei’s final burial in the holy city of Mashhad later this week. Authorities have organized memorial events in multiple cities, with large crowds expected to participate throughout the farewell ceremonies.
The funeral comes at a time of heightened regional tensions following the conflict that claimed Khamenei’s life. Iranian officials have presented the nationwide ceremonies as a symbol of national unity, while millions are expected to take part in the remaining memorial events before the burial.
