Trump Claims “Total Control” Over Strait of Hormuz, Says It Will Reopen Only After Deal

Donald Trump on Friday reiterated that the United States maintains “total control” over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, stating that the waterway remains closed under US authority for now. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump emphasized that the situation is being managed directly by his administration.

According to the US president, there have been discussions about reopening the strait, with parties involved expressing willingness to restore maritime activity. However, Trump said he deliberately chose not to proceed with reopening it at this stage. He explained that allowing the strait to operate normally would enable certain parties to generate significant daily revenue, which he estimated at around $500 million.

Trump further stated that he does not want such financial benefits to resume until a broader agreement is reached. He indicated that the decision to keep the strait closed is part of a larger strategy to push for a resolution, suggesting that economic pressure remains a key factor in ongoing negotiations.

Reaffirming his stance, Trump said the United States will decide when to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, adding that it could happen once a deal is finalized or if circumstances change. He described the current position as “very positive,” signaling confidence in the approach being taken by his administration regarding the situation.
