Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi has been sentenced to 74 lashes, a two-year travel ban, and a two-year prohibition on artistic activities after performing in an online concert without wearing a hijab.
The 29-year-old singer appeared in a livestreamed concert on YouTube in December 2024 alongside her four-member band. During the performance, Ahmadi wore a sleeveless black dress and did not cover her hair, which led to widespread attention both inside and outside Iran. The concert attracted millions of viewers online and quickly became a topic of discussion on social media.
Following the performance, Iranian authorities arrested Ahmadi and later filed charges against her. The court has now issued its verdict, imposing corporal punishment along with restrictions on her travel and professional career.
The case comes as Iran continues to enforce strict regulations regarding women’s dress codes and public appearances. Under Iranian law, women are required to wear a hijab in the presence of unrelated men. Female singers are also prohibited from performing solo in front of mixed-gender audiences.
The ruling has sparked strong reactions online, with many supporters praising Ahmadi for challenging restrictions placed on women. Several social media users described her as a symbol of resistance and courage, while others expressed concern over the punishment and its implications for artistic freedom in the country.
The case has once again drawn international attention to ongoing debates over women’s rights, freedom of expression, and cultural restrictions in Iran.
