The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Governing Board has called for a significant increase in sports funding to better support athletes and modernize training standards.
During its 36th meeting in Islamabad, chaired by the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Inter-Provincial Coordination, officials highlighted that the current non-development budget of around Rs 1.2 billion is insufficient. A large portion of this budget is spent on administrative costs, while only a small share about three to four percent goes toward athlete development and support for sports federations.
To address this issue, the board has proposed a nearly 300 percent increase in funding, raising the budget to Rs 3.82 billion. The aim is to improve training facilities, coaching, international participation, and overall athlete development in line with modern standards. The proposal will be sent to the Prime Minister for approval.
In addition, the board approved the release of Rs 8.2 million for the junior volleyball team, which recently finished as runners-up in an Asian tournament. The funds had been delayed due to concerns over age verification, but members agreed that such checks are the responsibility of the respective federation, not the PSB. The amount will now be distributed to the players according to policy.
