The primary suspect in the brutal assault and murder of seven-year-old Muntaha Zahra was killed during a late-night police operation in Sargodha, Pakistan.According to law enforcement officials, the suspect, identified as Muhammad Arslan, was fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire while in the custody of the Crime Control Department (CCD).
The incident unfolded on Tuesday night when a specialized CCD team was escorting Arslan to a specific location to recover the weapon used in the crime. Authorities reported that as the police vehicle approached the Jhal Chakian Canal bridge, a group of armed accomplices opened fire on the law enforcement convoy in an apparent attempt to free the suspect. Arslan was severely injured by the attackers’ bullets during the crossfire and succumbed to his wounds, while the assailants managed to flee the scene under the cover of darkness.
The operation followed a swift investigation by the Sargodha Police into the disappearance of young Muntaha. The child had gone missing after visiting a local grocery store in Karkhana Bazar. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage tracking her movement showed her entering the premises but never leaving, prompting a swift police raid. Officers subsequently discovered her body hidden in the upper residential quarters of the store, showing clear signs of violence and sexual assault.
Prior to the shootout, Arslan—a long-term employee of the shop—had confessed to the horrific crime during formal physical interrogation. Law enforcement officials had also taken four other suspects into custody regarding their alleged facilitation or connection to the incident. Following the shootout, a high-level search operation has been launched across the region to apprehend the fleeing attackers.
