The Punjab government has decided to phase out the procurement of petrol-powered vehicles across all public departments, marking a significant step toward reducing fuel consumption and promoting environmentally sustainable alternatives.
Provincial Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman announced that, going forward, only hybrid and electric vehicles will be purchased for official use. The policy is part of a broader strategy aimed at modernizing the government fleet while aligning with global trends in clean energy and climate responsibility.
The decision comes at a time when Pakistan is facing mounting pressure from rising fuel costs and an increasing reliance on imported petroleum products. These factors have not only strained the national economy but have also exposed the country to volatility in international oil markets.
By transitioning to hybrid and electric vehicles, the government aims to lower operational costs in the long run, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to improved air quality particularly in urban centers where pollution levels remain a major concern.
Officials indicate that the initiative may be implemented in phases, with priority given to departments with high fuel consumption. In addition, the move is expected to encourage the development of supporting infrastructure, such as electric vehicle charging stations, and boost confidence in Pakistan’s growing clean energy sector.
