Pakistan’s 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign ended in disappointment after a 2-1 defeat against Myanmar in their final Group E match at Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad.
Myanmar secured their fourth win of the round, finishing second in the group with 12 points behind Syria. Pakistan, meanwhile, ended their campaign with just two points from six matches.
Under coach Nolberto Solano, Pakistan showed a strong performance in the first half, creating several good chances but failing to score. Captain Alamgir Ghazi tested the Myanmar goalkeeper with a powerful long-range effort, while Shayek Dost was denied by an excellent save from close range.
The match remained goalless at halftime, but Myanmar took the lead just one minute into the second half after a costly mistake by Pakistan goalkeeper Saqib Hanif, whose misjudged back pass ended up in the net.
Myanmar doubled their lead before the hour mark when Than Paing scored from close range after a well-placed cross from Lwin Moe Aung. The visitors then controlled the game with better possession and passing.
Pakistan continued to push forward and finally scored in stoppage time when Shayek Dost headed in a cross from Tufail Shinwari. However, the late goal was not enough to change the result. Pakistan were also reduced to 10 men after Junaid Shah was injured when all substitutions had already been used.
After the match, coach Nolberto Solano said he was disappointed with the result but proud of the team’s effort, especially in the first half. He defended goalkeeper Saqib Hanif, saying mistakes are part of the game.
Defender Abdullah Shah said Pakistan had enough chances to win but failed to convert them. Myanmar’s coach Myo Hlaing Win praised both teams and appreciated Pakistan’s performance, while match-winner Than Paing credited his team’s execution.
With Syria topping the group, Myanmar finished their campaign on a high note, while Pakistan will reflect on missed opportunities despite showing signs of improvement.
