The Punjab Assembly on Monday approved the Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2026, setting 18 years as the minimum legal age for marriage for both males and females across the province.
The new law aims to address the long-standing issue of child marriage by introducing a uniform age requirement, ensuring that both boys and girls are legally considered eligible for marriage only upon reaching adulthood. Officials say the move is intended to protect children’s rights, promote education, and reduce early marriages that can have serious social and health consequences.
Under the legislation, stricter penalties are expected for those who violate the law, including individuals who facilitate or conduct underage marriages. Authorities believe that clearer legal guidelines and enforcement measures will help curb the practice and improve overall awareness in society.
The passage of the bill has been widely seen as a significant step toward safeguarding minors and aligning provincial laws with international standards on child protection and human rights.
